The first international symposium of the PhD Representatives of the MDW (University of Music and performing Arts Vienna) themed “From ancient to modern,” takes place on 28th – 30th of April 2017 at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna.

The conference welcomes national and international participants, whose research provides insight into the topics of music, aesthetics and art.

​

The Symposium is organised by the Student Representatives (HMDW) of the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, having Ms. Adriana Paler-Nicolescu as principal organizer and PhD representative. MAEK has the support of the mdw Rectorate – in the person of the Rector Ulrike Sych and Ms. Therese Kaufmann of the Research Funding Bureau.

This conference seeks to offer a presentation and exchange platform for the mdw PhD students/doctoral students, who can present and discuss their scientific research together with national and international colleagues, experts, musicologists.

… is the motto and the main idea of this symposium.

 

The concept of music, of aesthetics as a theory of beauty, of art or of perception, and especially of art has undergone a great change in the spiritual and cultural sciences over the course of time. The symposium MAEK, hosted for the first time by a student team from the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, would like to record the process of this change. In order to bring together the various disciplines around the three main concepts, which have become the objects of the passion and meticulous work of our colleagues, the theme of the symposium remains open.

The exchange and discussion between the different musical and art-scientific perspectives should be at the center of the symposium, culminating in the subsequent publication in anthology of the various contributions submitted. The publication will be revised by a scientific board and will appear in a bilingual edition in German and English.

In particular, contributions to the overarching aesthetic focus are welcome. works toughing on the historical, philosophical, experimental and social sciences are welcome.

The anthology will be published and distributed by Hollitzer Verlag, both in print, online and online (including the scientifically quoted EBSCO). A number of copies of the print edition will be handed to the participating persons. The anthology will then be available for purchase.

The symposium will be structured in the usual presentation formats: 20-minute presentations in English, followed by a 20 to 30-minute discussion.

We invite papers on, but not limited to music, aesthetics and art in traditional and modern constellations.

The papers should meet the following criteria 

> Word format (no pdf. format )

• Max. 10 pages, font size 12, 1,5 line distance

• if photos are used, they should be sent as a separate attachment, with a resolution of at least 300 pixel, with credits

• Language: English and / or German.

• Attachments: 

  • an abstract of ca. 300 words in English,

  • a CV of max. 1000 words in English and / or German language,

  • the payment receipt of the application fee (in case of MDW students this will be replaced by a copy of the Studienbestätigung).

The application fee:

• 150 Euro for international participants who are not students of a European (Union) university;

• 50 Euro for international participants who are students of a European university.

This fee includes:

• the active participation at the symposium in April 2017;

• the publication of the submitted scientific article in the volume printed by the Hollitzer Verlag Wien (distributed by EBSCO);

• one copy of the printed volume.

This fee does not include any travel or accommodation costs.

We are happy to announce that the conference will provide limited financial support for students or scholars without institutional support, within the existing budget.  

​

Please indicate in your submission email whether you would like to be considered for financial support, include your institutional affiliation (if any), the stage of your career, and a short description of your financial needs (travel, expenses, etc.). Additionally, we may have the opportunity to offer free childcare and special needs accommodation (e.g. sign language interpretation) for participants, so please also indicate if you require any such services.
